Hello!

I’m Onika, the girl behind the lens

I’m a passionate freediver, commercial vessel master/mate, and photographer who loves anything below the surface!

I’ve been incredibly lucky to have grown up at the Abrolhos Islands, a pristine chain of islands 30NM offshore from Geraldton, WA. It wasn’t until I was older that I realised just how many people don’t get to see the things that I have. My photography is a mix of close focus/wide angle shots to capture the detail in a particular sea creature, and landscape shots. I try to get photos that you wouldn’t normally see in a print shop, both locally and from around the state.

My love for photography started when I was 16. I worked a casual job after school at the local supermarket and saved up enough money to buy myself a GoPro. I thought it was the coolest thing ever to be able to swim around at the islands filming everything and making little YouTube videos out of it (if you do a sneaky search, they may still be on the internet!)

The GoPro accompanied me on most of my adventures as I grew older, from exploring more of the islands to crayfishing, windsurfing, and spearfishing. I really enjoyed taking photos of my partner windsurfing, and got to a point where I wanted more than what the GoPro could do. Enter my first APSC mirrorless camera, the Sony a6400 - what a learning curve that was! I had a cheap water housing that claimed to be able to withstand both diving and surfing... which it definitely did not. It was a lot to learn how a camera worked, using and maintaining a housing, and editing was a whole different beast. However, I stuck with it and slowly improved.

Today I enjoy shooting a mix of water sports, underwater wildlife, and have recently started exploring underwater portraits. All my photography is done by freediving - that is, diving on one breath with no scuba tanks or equipment. I really love being able to move around without the constraints of tanks, and with no bubbles means I can get closer to underwater creatures.

You can view my work in person at local markets around Geraldton and Dongara - check my Instagram account for updated times and locations.
